Inspired by a True Story
Written and directed by Leslie Alejandro, this film is inspired by the true story of a Korean exchange student whose dream of America turns into a fight for survival. Following the tragic loss of her sister, seventeen year old Youngwon Park, played by Laura Im, is sent to the United States through a foreign exchange program in hopes of becoming the ideal daughter her parents envision. Instead of finding opportunity and freedom, she arrives in a small Midwestern town where she is placed under the strict control of an overbearing host mother named George, played by Monica Potter.

Isolated from the outside world and burdened with relentless chores, Youngwon forms an unlikely bond with Keiko, played by Haruka Igarashi,a Japanese exchange student trapped in the same household. Despite language barriers and cultural differences, the two girls learn to communicate and rely on one another as they navigate George’s increasingly oppressive demands. Based on real events, the film explores resilience, friendship, and the harsh realities hidden beneath the promise of the American Dream.
The Village Behind the Vision
The cast and crew worked through long days and nights to capture the story’s key moments, from emotionally demanding scenes to technically complex sequences involving stunt performers, precision driving, and specialized camera rigging. From carefully coordinated stunt work to creative rig setups designed to achieve unique shots, every department played a role in bringing the film’s vision to the screen.
Despite the challenges, the production maintained a strong sense of collaboration and camaraderie throughout the shoot. The cast and crew supported one another every step of the way, creating an environment that felt more like a family than a film set and helping make the production a successful experience for everyone involved.
